Business Support Officer/Lead

Excellent communication and organisational skills required. 

 An experienced administrator, competent with Office 365.

Experienced in management of facilities as well as financial, IT and other administrative systems. 

This post will provide administrative and office support including financial recording, ideally with experience of working with bookkeeping software. 

Entry-level applicants are welcome to apply as an Energy Support Officer as full training can be provided.


Full-time or Part-time.

Officer - £26,410 - £29,052

Lead (management role) - £29,052 - £30,636

 (depending on experience) plus 8% pension

 

Contract until 31st March 2026, with extension dependent upon continuing funding.

Volunteering with us

If you would like to support THAW or are unable to apply for one of our paid roles, then do consider volunteering in our friendly office or helping to steer the charity as a board member. 


Most in-office voluntary jobs are part of our 'Energy Support Officer' role - see below to learn more - but we are always open to new ideas! We have various jobs that just require a small commitment of time but can help our team significantly. This can range from admin support, to delivering Cosy Home Packs and food parcels.

Board Member (Treasurer)

Are you a finance professional who wants to make a real difference in your community? 


Our charity, dedicated to Tackling Household Affordable Warmth (THAW), is seeking a passionate and experienced Volunteer Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees. 


Use your financial expertise to ensure our resources are strategically managed and effectively deployed to help vulnerable people stay warm and healthy. This is a vital voluntary role providing     governance and financial leadership. 


Insight      

  • Provide financial oversight and strategic governance to support the charity's mission of reducing levels of fuel poverty and achieving affordable warmth
  • Manage and report on the charity's finances, ensuring statutory compliance and efficient resource allocation. 
  • Attend regular board meetings, contributing strategic advice on budgets, funding, and financial sustainability.
  • Ideal for a qualified accountant or finance professional with a passion for social impact

Board Members (General)

 

We are seeking dedicated and enthusiastic individuals to join our Board of Trustees as 

Volunteer Board Members.


The Role

As a Board Member, you will play a crucial role in the strategic governance of THAW Orkney, ensuring we meet our charitable objectives, maintain financial sustainability, and effectively deliver our essential services to the community.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing strategic direction and oversight to ensure the charity fulfils its mission.
  • Ensuring the charity complies with all legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitoring the charity's financial performance and sustainability.
  • Contributing to the development of robust policies and practices.
  • Supporting and guiding the staff team.
  • Acting as an ambassador for THAW Orkney and its work.


Who We Are Looking For

We welcome expressions of interest from individuals with a genuine commitment to our cause. We are particularly interested in candidates who can bring expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Charity Governance and Law
  • Finance, Accounting, or Fundraising
  • Energy Efficiency, Policy, or the Renewables Sector
  • Welfare Rights, Benefits, or Income Maximisation
  • Marketing, Communications, or Public Relations
  • Lived experience or deep understanding of community issues in Orkney, particularly fuel poverty.

You will need to demonstrate:

  • A strong commitment to the mission and values of THAW Orkney.
  • The ability to think strategically and contribute to effective decision-making.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to dedicate the necessary time to Board meetings and preparation.


Commitment

This is a voluntary, unremunerated position, but reasonable expenses will be covered. 

The Board meets regularly throughout the year for board meetings.
